Information For Authors

Prospective authors and volume editors interested in submitting a proposal for consideration of publication as a Scholarly Edition should visit the submissions page for information and instructions on submitting a proposal. We do not accept full manuscripts until a book proposal has been submitted, reviewed, and accepted.

Books@Atla Open Press does not publish PhD dissertations, DMin projects, or other terminal degree theses as such; to be considered for publication, these works must be revised or otherwise modified to make them appealing to the wider audience of Atla and beyond.

Prospective authors and volume editors are encouraged to contact the editorial board in advance of submitting a full proposal for help or guidance in developing a book idea.

Please note, eventual manuscripts must comply with our manuscript submission guidelines, which specify, among other things, acceptable file format and typeface. If your proposed book cannot be submitted as a compliant manuscript, please contact the Editorial Board prior to submitting your proposal.

Books published with Atla Open Press are available electronically open access in PDF and EPUB format under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial License (CC-BY-NC 4.0). Books will also be available as print-on-demand at a commercially reasonable price. Under the terms of the Author Agreement, authors and volume editors are paid a modest honorarium in lieu of any royalties or other compensation. Authors retain copyright in their own works.

The author agreement utilized by Atla Open Press is derived from the Model Publishing Contract for Digital Scholarship and contains several addenda that will be completed by the author, editor-in-chief, and Atla, including: a timeline for manuscript submission, editorial review, and production; documentation of any copyright or other permissions obtained by the author for usage of material that exceeds fair use or other legal exceptions; and listing of any contributors to the work.
