Balancing the Books: A Practical Approach to Navigating Emerging Challenges in Small Academic Theological Libraries
Synopsis
This chapter considers emerging challenges for small academic theological libraries in the UK, highlighting the balancing act that is required to meet these challenges. Drawing on some of the significant emerging challenges for larger academic libraries, small libraries and libraries run by solo librarians, as well as those highlighted by theological librarians, Williams considers issues such as Artificial Intelligence, library services, decolonising collections, learning support, budget limitations, visibility and user expectations, through the distinctive lens of small academic theological libraries. In response, Williams suggests a mix of practical approaches, skill development and broader strategies to respond to these challenges. These include the importance of membership of ABTAPL and other professional bodies, keeping up to date with developments and collaboration with other libraries. Alongside these, Williams offers practical real-world suggestions tailored to the unique needs of small academic theological libraries, enabling their librarians to craft bespoke solutions to the challenges.
