Portraits of Lifelong Learners

Authors

Jennifer L. Sanborn

Synopsis

This chapter presents first-hand accounts of the experiences of learners, complementing the exploration of the lifelong learning for ministry ecotone by other chapters of this book. The author contacted and interviewed eight lifelong learners, curating their responses into portraits that are organized by book section theme. These de-identified portraits, presented with aliases, depict how and why diverse, global ministry leaders access, integrate, and commit to on-going learning. Each portrait conveys a particular story and relies extensively on the learner’s own voice and perspective. While these portrayals cannot represent the full array of lifelong learners for ministry, their individual stories prompt valuable questions for all to consider. The author invites all leaders of lifelong learning programs to consider if and how they are listening to their learners and holding their learners’ experiences at the center of their program offerings.
