The Strength of Multiplicity: Developing Cultural Awareness Through the Hispanic Community

This chapter argues that effectively serving Hispanic/Latino lifelong learners requires more than just access or representation; it calls for intentional cultural awareness rooted in hospitality, justice, and the theological affirmation of the imago Dei. Moving beyond “one-size-fits-all” models, the chapter provides an overview of Hispanic/Latino realities, emphasizing generational diversity, linguistic complexity, faith traditions, and ongoing inequities that influence learning experiences. Through three strategic approaches—strengthening institutional cultural awareness and commitment, creating inclusive strategies across governance and programming, and integrating inclusivity into curriculum, faculty, and staff development—the chapter offers practical tools to promote academic success, engagement, and a sense of belonging. Anchored in biblical inclusion and culturally responsive adult learning theory, this chapter encourages institutions to shift from superficial inclusion toward systemic transformation and long-term vitality.
